The Creative Curriculum / School Management

Virtual Vision: - The Creative Curriculum / School Management

What is management for? Who needs be managed? What needs to be managed?

Consider a management structure for a learning setting with 200 learners
Using the string and pin board – map it out – use the luggage labels to define the roles and responsibilities of the people that the pins represent.

Who needs what qualifications to deliver the services of your learning setting?

Using the wheel diagram – populate the sectors with what you consider to be the areas of learning investigation and tutoring that you think are core, essential, advisable, choices

What is management for?

Someone to have an overview
Someone to make the final decision - strong leadership.
Reporting structures.

Who / What needs to be managed?
Everyone needs support, but teachers need the flexibility to make their own decisions and take responsibility for their work, children, space, time.

Resources need to be managed.

Money needs to be managed, it would be fantastic in class teachers had a small budget to spend on what they wish during the year.

Use of space needs to be managed / timetable.

what is management for?

take responsibility....duty of care within organisation...
global view, an overview to ensure right and fair things happen.
responsibility for philosophical base/strategic direction/ethos
working knowledge of operations

putting the child at the centre - is what a creative curriculum is all about.

what engages them? what inspires them?
move physically - don't remain static

brain gym

stimulus - various and regular

the unexpected! surprises

manage the curriculum,
manage the staff
manage the children
manage the fabric of the building
having a general overview of all aspects of the school - multi-tasking
as a school manager - especially as a head teacher - you dont get the opportunity to be with the children much - tends to be a business role -
you need to be a good delegator

contact with children - not enough for manager (head or deputy head - particularly if you dont have a class of your own)

management structure = team, members of which would bring their own skills & specialities and areas of expertise

we have a creative learning manager and a business manager

each supported by a team of admin and managers.

the business manager is responsible for budgets and fund raising, legal obligations and outside links, marketing and promotion.

the creative learning manager is responsible for what is being taught who is teaching and how it's being taught. with a support of teaching coordinators

teachers can then get on with working realtionships with the pupils and parents and don't have to do the business end of things

artists etc come in to add to the teaching and impact onto creative management

Management is there to ensure that creativity is taking place in the curriculum. Management is there to support and encourage the creative teacher to make the changes to both their teaching practice and their learning environment. The management can achieve this through helping to secure funding, allowing the teacher time for reflection and training, acting as a 'buffer' between other less responsive staff members, governors, parents and inspectors/school advisors. They should defend creativity taking place within the school and give teachers the opportunity to experiment with their creative practice without fear of failiure.

Managmenet is to facilitate young people in discovering who they are in their community and the wider world.
To discover their skills and what they have to offer.
To 'follow their bliss' in the words of Joseph Campbell. To offer the skills and knowledge to enable them to do this.
To Listen and offer the opportunity to participate in decision making but also to offer guidance.

Everyone needs to be managed to a greater or lesser degree. Overall there should be a manager/management team responsible and accountable for key decisions that need to be made. The Manageemnt structure needs to be pro active and flexible towards change and different situations. The structure is like a jigsaw all pieces interrelated and dependant upon each other to work. The structure would need to be able to be capable of reacting to external factors whilst at the same time being capable of influencing and moulding externalised agendas for the benefits of the children.

Management is to provide support,logistically and financially.
They beleive in what you are tryin g to do
Provide an overview
to ensure progression
take over administration
point of contact with outside agencies LEA etc

Qualifications;
involve outside people who don't necessarily have teaching qualifications but can provide a different perspective

Management that responds to project ideas with funding and support.
How about school community projects that involve pupils,parents and artists,dramatists,writers etc and the wider community.

yes I agree teacher do require support but also the freedom to do what they do best and maximize their potential as a coach. Do all teachers get the chance to work with other classes teaching their specialism?

Secondary education
Essentially schools as they are structured are more about serving a very narrow model of a perceived work environment. The result of this processing causes stress and anxiety to both students and teachers.
45 min lessons should be abolished and young people should instead work on gaining an understanding of their place in the world. The job of the manager is to oversee this process and to manage the budget!!!
A structure for learning would be for young people to spend a part of their time engaged in the community contributing and developing practical skills and a part
