The learner needs encouragement to say what they are thinking without the risk of being ridiculed or even worry that they might be 'wrong'.

A creative learner is someone who is receptive to many facets of information, open to new ideas, able to develop own slant, able to follow a tangential journey, explore new ideas, inspire, learn new skills, combine knowledge from different threads and solve problems.

Everyone has the potential to be a creative learner, given the stimulus and opportunity.
Posted by: lorna & cath at June 22, 2006 11:20 AM
everyone is a creative learner. everyone needs the opportunity to be in a learning situation where what and who they are is deeply valued. a system which appeals to a range of learning styles and to lifelong learning is of the essence. failure should be regarded as a means to learning, not seen as a "black mark"

A creative learner can be anybody, any age, from any background, culture. They have an awareness that enables creative learning to take place in any environment. They are open to and can adapt to change. Different experiences provide the creative learner with varied opportunities to have a creative learning experience. It is impossible to identify creative learners through appearance, it only becomes evident through communication. Opportunities need to be made accessible to individuals who want to develop their creative learning.

This is true but if the child is not in a trusting environment even a creative learner will be stifled. They will need to trust that the teacher and the children in the class will be supportive of their ideas.
How do you achieve this in a classroom of 27 children?

Responsibility for the creative learner lies with society in general. In particular with cultural organisations, schools, parents and an informed government which is prepared to be guided by experts. Responsibility for yourself to be a creative learner.

Support needed for the creative learner ranges from funding to confidence & self esteem, enthusiasm and interest adn knowledge. Those who should support creative learning are cultural ambassadors and equivalents, cultural partners and the same type of role in many different places, not just in education and cultural venues.

A creative learner is someone who embraces change, someone who is seeking, open to new experiences, not afraid of the unknown, prepared to fail, adaptable and flexible, wants to learn from others and impart their knowledge to others. A lateral thinker who can organise what it is they have learnt but also an inspirational daydreamer. creative learner may have many skills from being able to paint or sing, to other skills such as lateral thinking, being organised, all are intrinsically important but everyone is different.
How do you recognise a creative learner? Someone who surprises you, who doesn't come up with the obvious. Open to new experineces and try new things. Never judge a book by the cover, someone may be creative in their own way, even though they may not initially look like a stereotype.

the creative learner is someone who is allowed to be creative within the learning environment - everyone can be a creative learner given the opportunity. they must feel comfortable in expressing their ideas and not criticised or made to feel that there is only one way of doing things. teacher must be POSITIVE, OPEN AND CONSTRUCTIVE.
Emphasis could be more on process - not teacher's idea of what the process is but a more exploratory personal approach by the learner - this may not result in a product. the emphasis on results (curriculum) stifles creativity - it is difficult to encourage creativity within the NC.
important not to discriminate between 'expected' or preconceived abilities of children (or behavioural reputations) - give all the same opportunities and don't be afraid to challenge them with activities you feel may be beyond their capabilities - this can be dependent on not emphasising the end product, rather on the learning process or problem-solving

We are all creative learners. We are recognised by the fact that we breath and for some hours of the day we are conscious.
The essential needs are learning choices from birth, the skills to learn before knowledge acquisition, learning coaches not teachers, a variety of spaces to learn, the most learning experiences that we can give.
The responsibility for the creative learner lies with those people who take the risk to empower children, giving the responsibilty to the 'frontline' staff, to deliver exciting, innovative, flexible, learner centred education.
Strategy planers and government need to let go to allow learning environments to work autonomously.
We need new assessment models, non knowledge based and learner centred.

a creative learner may be good at or inclined to sharing their knowledge, but maybe in a quiet way (a creative leaner is not necessarily a confident or outspoken person)

eyes open to possibilities
a here and now aura
a soul heart courage core
CORRR!!!!!
not rigid but open and flexible said the dancer
light and playful
creative learners R enthusiastic and want to share their creativity
Responsibility (ability to respond) lies with home/parents/school/individual/environment and routine/timetable/ government
the support needed is encouragement/uncertainty and security

Initially responsibility for creative learning lies with parents/carers who are the childs first educators and then with the school, laying the foundations for future learning. This enables the child to explore their creative self in a non judgemental environment. Ultimately the creative learner has to accept responsibility for what happens throughout their life.

The creative learner is not judged, is awake and engaged, inspired by life and willing to take risks.
Someone who is engaged by mind, body and heart.
Someone who is allowed to feel bored and has the time to digest.
Someone who feels supported by peers and where critical feedback is not feared. They feel safe and secure to take those risks.
Someone who is encouraged to be curious and who's thoughts and suggestions are heard and they appreciated by a receptive auidence.
A creative learner is supported by an organisation which is responsive rather than mechanistic.
Feelings are shared with others where they don't feel judged personally.
Someone who is supported by adults and peers who are prepared to take risks themselves and these people can nuture and model the creative process. Taking emotional risks is key!
FEAR IS THE GREATEST HURDLE TO COVER COME!

we wouldn't confuse a hunter-gatherer with an industrial factory worker they look completely different
and we won't confuse a future us from the present post industrial consumer
that's what a creative learner looks like

where does responsibility lie? starts with government, also education authorities, heads, teachers - also parents - pre-school activities i.e. everyone!
Posted by: lisa & louise at June 22, 2006 11:59 AM
responsibility also lies with the learner themselves.

A creative learner will fail, laugh at themselves, acknowledge fear and overcome it, embrace change as an opportunity not a problem and play!! What wonderful people they are!! Do you know any?

A good listener who understands needs of each child by giving them time to express themselves...stop feeling in an incessant rush.
Someone who sees the whole and the connections between the different elements that a child learns. Someone who makes connections between learning and the community.
A person who is also a learner and has time out from teaching to fulfill and enrich themselves...
Active in doing their own research.
A person who realises that the boundaries of the classroom are not the boundaries of learning and takes children out to experience and participate in the real world...who is prepared to take risks that make the children to feel safe in taking theirs.
Discuss with the children what is necessary for the healthy functioning of the community of the school and offer them opportunities to take on their own roles in it.
The teacher is supported by being active in policy making and feeling valued in the community of the school.
